A Different Kind of Light
Most cameras see the world the way our eyes do. That’s kind of the point. But strip out the visible spectrum and let in only infrared light — the wavelength that sits just beyond what we can see — and suddenly the familiar becomes extraordinary.
The camera I use for this work is a converted DSLR. The modification is a permanent one: the internal filter that blocks infrared light is removed and replaced with one that does the opposite. What you’re left with is a camera that ignores most of the visible world and records the infrared instead. It’s a dedicated piece of kit, not a trick or a preset. You can’t undo it.
What does that actually mean in practice? Foliage goes white — almost luminous — because leaves reflect infrared heavily. Skies go dark, sometimes almost black. Water goes still and glassy. Skin takes on a smooth, softly lit quality. Shadows deepen. The contrast between organic material and the built environment becomes stark, sometimes dramatic, sometimes quietly strange.
Dublin, as it turns out, is a fine place for it. The mix of Georgian red brick, coastal light, canal greenery, and the kind of diffused sky we get here for free — it all plays well in infrared. Familiar streets read differently. Parks and green spaces take on an almost otherworldly quality. It’s the same city, from the same spot, with a completely different story to tell.
This is inherently a limited edition medium. The images require careful processing and each print is produced individually. A small number of fine art prints are available — framed or unframed — suitable for home or office spaces. These aren’t mass reproductions. They’re made one at a time, and they look like it.
If you’re looking for something genuinely a bit different for a wall — something that makes people stop and look twice — it might be worth a conversation.
