Beyond the Ordinary
Specialist & Technical Photography – One Step Beyond
Some projects don’t fit a standard service list. The location is unusual, the deliverable is complex, the technical requirement sits outside what most photographers would know where to start with. That’s where this work lives.
Over the years the specialist side of things has taken me to some interesting places and produced some genuinely unusual briefs. Gigapixel 360 panoramas for blue-chip clients on projects of genuine international scale. Sensitive facility documentation for international agencies where the access protocols were as demanding as the photography itself. Infrared captures, long-form timelapses running over months, remote timelapse systems left to work autonomously in locations that weren’t exactly easy to get to. The brief varies enormously. The requirement for precision doesn’t.
The technical toolkit is broad. Matterport spatial scanning for fully navigable 3D environments — the kind of immersive documentation that lets a client walk a space remotely with genuine fidelity. Photogrammetry for accurate dimensional capture, useful for heritage recording, architectural documentation, and anything where the geometry of a space or object needs to be preserved as well as the appearance. Gaussian splatting, which sits at the frontier of spatial capture and produces an almost uncanny sense of dimensional presence from photographic source material. Drone-mounted 360 panoramas that place the viewer in mid-air above a location with full spherical vision. Gigapixel imaging that stitches dozens or hundreds of frames into a single file of extraordinary resolution — the kind of image where you can zoom from an establishing cityscape to a face in a window without losing quality.
Timelapse work runs from a single-day construction sequence to a multi-month remote installation documenting a project from ground-break to completion. The remote systems work independently, transmitting on schedule, requiring minimal intervention. That kind of long-game documentation suits infrastructure projects, development schemes, environmental monitoring, and anything where change over time is the whole story.
For organisations approaching an unusual project — a sensitive site, an unfamiliar format, a workflow that doesn’t yet exist — consultancy is available at the front end. Fact-finding, technical specification, workflow design, best practice guidance, or simply a conversation about what’s actually possible and what it would take. That can lead to a shoot, or it can simply help an internal team move forward with better information.
The work has taken me across Europe and beyond. The postcode changes. The standard doesn’t.
